We began dating on April 18th 1992
when we both attended the same High School, and before either of us could
drive. After
several years of dating we decided
that we wanted to get married but determined to wait until Ian had graduated
from College. Although it was at times a struggle to wait we did not move
in together we got married.
--------------------------------------------------Our Engagement-----------------------------------------------------
With Ian’s graduation from the University
of Colorado planned in August of 1997, he secretly booked the reception
site for the
wedding and chose the date over
a year in advance. Several months later Ian had Candis’ ring made
and planned a surprise proposal and engagement party.
-----------------------------------------------------The Wedding-------------------------------------------------------
The wedding was planned so that our
immediate families and bridal party could enjoy the celebration without
the usual
responsibilities, which were taken
care of by other friends and professionals.
Candis wore a long sleeved Emanuelle
gown, with a full tulle skirt and sweep train. She wore a cathedral
length veil and carried a
cluster of bridal white roses with
eucalyptus berries. The brides-matrons wore sleeveless, floor length,
Bill Levkoff gowns in
Champaign and carried matching clusters
of roses in Fire and Ice. Ian and the groomsmen wore black tuxes
with a double lapel,
and gold and black checked vests.
Candis’ 2 year-old cousin was our Flowergirl/Ringbearer and wore a black
velvet dress that
matched the tuxes and carried a
silk hand-made ring pillow.
The wedding was held at East Boulder
Baptist Church, where we are both members, and officiated by our retired
pastor Allen
Harrison, who came out from Ozark,
MO to do the ceremony. The reception was held at Karen’s in the Country,
a local restaurant
designed specifically for hosting
weddings. Karen’s is a full service facility and took care of every
detail for us.
The reception began with hors d’oeuvres
while the guests watched us have our pictures taken, and mingled with our
parents.
Included among the guests were 8
of Ian’s relatives who had flown all the way from Scotland, and wore their
traditional garb. We
then sat down for a buffet style
dinner at beautifully set tables, which included heart-shaped bread napkin
rings. The cake was
ivory with pulled sugar ribbons,
spun sugar overlay, and tiny stephanotis flowers. After Ian tossed
the garter, his groomsmen
doused him with several bottles
of Champaign following a trend that had begun at some of their weddings.
After changing, we made our getaway
in Ian’s 1972 Ford Bronco which was now barely recognizable. We spent
our wedding night at
the Marriot and left early the next
morning for Swept Away, an all-inclusive resort in Negril, Jamaica.
The day after the wedding
Candis’ parents hosted a barbecue
for all our relatives who had come for the wedding.
